COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS (CFD) ENGINEER
 
U.S. CITIZENS ONLY!  Due to the nature of our research and the necessity to obtain security clearance, the Engineering division of Southern Research is only permitted to consider and hire U.S. Citizens for this position.  Permanent Residents and Visa-holders are not eligible for employment.

General Summary
Immediate opening for a candidate with experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to join the Hypersonic Structures Department.  The Hypersonic Structures Department is a team that supports several high-speed / hypersonic material evaluation programs with the Department of Defense, DARPA, and NASA.  These evaluations include off-site ground testing at arc heater and wind tunnel facilities, as well as on-site high temperature laboratory testing.  The successful candidate will utilize CFD to analyze fluid dynamic flows in arc heater, wind tunnel, and flight environments.  Results from analysis will be coordinated with other engineers and customers to support instrumentation and test planning.
 
Key Responsibilities

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics execution and analysis for arc heater test conditions, wind tunnel test conditions, and hypersonic flight analysis.  Utilize available test data to support CFD analysis results.
  • Provide guidance to other engineering personal based on analysis results related to test and instrumentation design
  • Detailed analysis of flow conditions and trajectories using 1st order principles and simulations to define boundary conditions on test articles and vehicles.
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of engineering discipline through familiarity with current engineering literature and state of technology in the field.
  • Prepares and present reports, presentations, and papers to clients and the professional community.

  • Compiles and analyzes research results and arrives at interpretations.
  • Independently evaluates, selects, interprets, and applies standard engineering techniques, processes, and criteria, and uses judgment in making adaptations and modifications to research projects.
  • Contributes to the design of research projects and prepares, presents, and follows up on research proposals to clients.
  • Contributes to project development activities.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to learn quickly in a complex and high technology environment.
  • Works on problems that require creative insight.
  • Conducts experimental procedures and collects, analyzes, and interprets results for review by more experienced researchers or management.
  • Exercises judgment in developing methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Responsible for reaching goals within time and budget constraints.
  • Participates in proposal preparation.
  • Completes assigned marketing and project development activities.
  • Plans and conduct independent work.
  • Guides the research efforts of less experienced research staff as needed.
  • Performs other duties as may be required by supervisor.


Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET
  • Master degree or higher in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering is required
  • Experience with CFD analysis of supersonic conditions.
  • Demonstrated experience using MS Office required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hypersonic experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Design of Experiments desired
  • Matlab experience desired
  • US3D experience desired
