Job Summary

The Assistant Engineer performs in a professional manner all aspects of vessel maintenance as directed by the Chief Engineer. Performs engine room watch including performing scheduled rounds and associated log keeping.

Role and Responsibilities

Role Specific Responsibilities

  • Works under the direction of the Chief Engineer
  • Assumes responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of all vessel machinery on the watch, as directed by the Chief Engineer
  • Ensures the preventive maintenance has been completed on all machinery, outlined within the vessel maintenance schedule
  • Inventories, cleans and organizes tools, equipment, parts and supplies
  • Completes necessary documentation (engine room logs, preventative maintenance work orders, supply orders, equipment lists, etc.)
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of all machinery spaces
  • Compliance with the Safety Management System and applicable regulations
  • Reports unsafe conditions to the Chief Engineer and initiates action to prevent accidents
  • Performs additional duties as assigned


Requirements

Qualifications

Credential Requirements

  • Possess at minimum a valid endorsement as licensed Assistant Engineer
  • 3rd Assistant Engineer’s license, DDE, or equivalent
  • Valid TWIC, Passport, MMC

Experience

  • Knowledge of all vessel systems; hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, diesel, propulsion, and auxiliaries
  • Marine experience, military experience, or equivalent experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to adapt quickly to changing needs and priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work within a multi-functional, organizational structure and exhibits robust interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with managing and prioritizing multiple assignments and tasks
  • Self-motivated and ability to work within a fast-paced environment
