Description

The National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center is a 200-bed hospital dedicated to clinical research in which all care is delivered within the context of more than 1600 active clinical research protocols.  The mission of the Clinical Center is scientific discovery, including clinical protocols to evaluate rare diseases and clinical trials of novel interventions.  More than 90% of the 750 interventional studies are Phase I or Phase II trials.

The NIH invites candidates with strong leadership credentials, a proven record of interdisciplinary collaborations and scientific credentials in mass spectrometry to apply for the position of Staff Scientist, Chemistry Service, Department of Laboratory Medicine at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. The NIH Clinical Center is the largest hospital in the world totally dedicated to translational clinical research with an extensive portfolio of innovative research protocols.

The Clinical Chemistry Service provides clinical laboratory support for all adult and pediatric inpatients/outpatients participating in clinical research protocols at the NIH. It consists of five sections: General Chemistry, Immunoassay, Urine, Special Chemistry and HPLC/Mass Spectrometry. The Service has a longstanding research program directed to new method development as well as collaborative and translational research that is linked to Institute initiatives. There are numerous opportunities for creative translational clinical research with Institute colleagues, offering remarkable opportunities for scientific collaboration. In addition, a COMACC-accredited post-doctoral fellowship in clinical chemistry is offered with past trainees having successfully obtained academic positions.  The Clinical Chemistry service currently consists of approximately 40 staff members, including three doctoral level clinical chemists and two post-doctoral fellows.

The candidate should possess a Ph.D. or equivalent medical doctoral degree and formal post-doctoral training in clinical chemistry resulting in American Board of Clinical Chemistry certification/eligibility or completed a residency in Clinical Pathology resulting in certification by the American Board of Pathology.
