Position Summary

Genomatica develops commercial biobased processes to make widely-used chemicals that enable better, more sustainable everyday products. That enables our partners and leading brands to offer better food packaging, auto parts, clothing, tires, carpets, and more.

We’ve commercialized processes for bio-BDO (for plastics) and for biobased butylene glycol (for cosmetics); and our technology drives the world’s first commercial-scale biobased plant for a major intermediate chemical. We’re working on polyamide intermediates (nylon) and on butadiene (tires); and we’re helping numerous companies with their bioprocesses. We have more on the way.

Genomatica seeks a talented, driven, and influential leader to lead a team of Downstream Process (DSP) Scientists and Engineers. Candidates must have experience developing process technologies within  R&D and pilot facilities. This position will work closely with Genomatica’s other functional R&D and Commercial teams to develop, optimize, and scale-up Genomatica’s biobased process technologies.  

Essential Functions and Responsibilities include the following.   • Lead and manage a team of process engineers, chemists, and technicians to support Genomatica’s DSP development and scale up projects.
  • Full responsibility for the Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) and all operational aspects of the DSP lab including experimental planning/scheduling, budgeting, maintaining equipment and instrumentation.
  • Interface with key R&D stakeholders and leadership to scope and plan projects for thedownstream separation and purification of chemicals produced via fermentation.
  • Identify and implement best practices in bioprocess development, DSP lab operation, in separation and purification experimentation.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop engineers and scientists; foster an environment of trust and innovation.
  • Create a vision for the team and upgrade DSP lab capabilities to allow most efficient and effective conversion of biotechnology research and development to commercialization
  • Conduct ongoing research and assessment of industry best practices, applicable technologies, new inventions and industry trends.
  • Contribute to technology transfer and process cross validation with CMOs/CROs

Qualifications & Experience

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required in order satisfactorily perform in this role.


A degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Applied Chemistry or related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

Would prefer a BS or MS degree. 


Relevant bioprocess or chemical process lab management experience required; preferred 8+ years of industrial experience developing and scaling separation and purification processes, including but not limited to filtration, centrifugation, chromatography and distillation.

Knowledge Requirements

In depth technical knowledge of bioprocess and chemical process development, lab or pilot operations and optimization, technology transfer, scale-up/scale-down techniques.


  • Strong leadership skills and proven success in building and leading high-performing, diverse teams.
  • Strong leadership skills in managing EH&S and operation of a chemical or biochemical R&D lab or pilot facility
  • Ability to develop and nurture collaborative relationships with team members, peers, potential partners, etc. in multi-cultural settings.
  • Ability to influence a wide variety of individuals, including executive leadership, R&D, peers, collaborators, and third-party contractors.
  • A strong technical background in separation and purification process and demonstrated success in running lab operation, developing, scaling up/down, and commercializing process technologies.
  • Ability to identify root causes of complex problems and develop creative solutions to solve them.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly motivated, high energy, “can do” attitude, self-starter with a strong sense of urgency.

This position involves working in office, laboratory, and pilot/manufacturing environments. Time spent in partner laboratories or at manufacturing facilities requires compliance with all site safety rules. The primary work location is at Genomatica’s R&D Headquarters in San Diego, CA.
