Manager, Predoctoral Dental Education

The American Dental Association is dedicated to promoting the public's health through its initiatives in research, education, advocacy, public awareness and the development of standards.

The Manager, Predoctoral Dental Education, is responsible for managing the consultation and accreditation activities for U.S. based predoctoral dental education programs and dental therapy education programs. The Manager also serves as a staff secretary for the Review Committee on Predoctoral Dental Education and the Joint Advisory Committee on Dental Education Information.

As needed, the position also assists the Director in managing the consultation activities for international dental education programs and in supporting the Standing Committee on International Accreditation. This position provides primary staff support for the area of predoctoral dental and dental therapy education, including:

1) developing policy reports and completing post-meeting follow-up;
2) preparing accreditation site visit reports and correspondence, monitoring and processing accreditation applications and program reports, and providing related responses and general correspondence;
3) maintaining current, accurate accreditation documents, templates, and files, ensuring electronic records are up to date, and public information is available on the Commission's website;
4) attending and overseeing site visits in the assigned disciplines;
5) formulating and implementing polices related to dental education;
6) utilizing research and Commission policy to make appropriate decisions;
7) serving as staff secretary for the review committee and other committees as assigned;
8) serving as a liaison and resource to other agencies;
9) providing continuity and consistency in understanding, interpreting and applying Commission policies and standards necessary to act as a resource for programs, site visitors and Commission volunteers; and
10) maintaining site visitor documents, and developing and providing training and information to CODA volunteers. This position staffs several accreditation site visits each year and writes site visit reports.

This position is also responsible for planning and coordinating site visitor training and provides consultation to programs preparing for their site visits. The Manager is required to be trained annually in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in/with higher education, accreditation or its equivalent, supervisory experience of groups or work committees, working with a large number of volunteers and tracking details, working in a team approach environment.
  • Must have the ability to prioritize and execute accurate and complete work products with limited supervision.
  • Must have the ability to analyze complex issues related to education and accreditation and analyze causes and synthesize related information and formulate creative strategies for enhancing the accreditation process.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication, report writing, interpersonal, analytical, creative problem solving, organizational, project management, and time management skills.
  • Must have knowledge of trends and issues related to health professions education, accreditation, institutional effectiveness, and competency-based education.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficient in Databases, Websites, Adobe Acrobat, SharePoint or other web-based document retention and meeting platforms.
  • Evening and weekend work may be necessary while traveling for CODA site visits, to attend national meetings, and to participate in CODA or committee meetings, for example.
  • Extensive travel is required.

Highly Desirable Skills:

  • Master's degree in Education or related field
  • Knowledge of dental licensure and certification issues
  • Knowledge of allied education and practice issues
  • Previous experience in dental education that has led to experience and contact with dental deans and program administrators through dental education programs
  • Knowledge of international education and health care trends.
  • Master's degree in education, health care profession and/or project management.
  • Doctorate in dentistry or education.
