      Summary

      American Progress is seeking a highly motivated and organized professional with a strong advocacy and organizing background, as well as an understanding of strategic communications, to serve as the Associate Director/Director of Advocacy for the Gun Violence Prevention team.

      The Associate Director/Director of Advocacy will work with the Vice President of Gun Violence Prevention to develop and execute national, state, and local legislative and advocacy campaigns to further American Progress’ gun violence prevention policy goals. The Associate Director/Director will be responsible for leveraging the research capabilities and resources of American Progress to provide customized, actionable messaging and content to a variety of progressive groups organizing on the issue nationally and at the state and local levels. A focus of the Associate Director/Director will be facilitating and helping grow and coordinate a nationwide network of gun violence prevention organizations and advocates, as well as working with external stakeholders and state and local coalitions to assist in grassroots and grasstops organizing within a wide variety of constituencies. The ideal candidate will have some familiarity with the gun violence prevention issue and strong relationships across a range of progressive organizations.

      Responsibilities:

      • Work with key stakeholders to develop and implement legislative and advocacy strategies and campaigns on gun violence prevention efforts at the national, state, and local levels.
      • Facilitate a nationwide coalition of more than 200 national and state gun violence prevention and allied organizations to develop strategic and coordinated policy, advocacy, and organizing agendas.
      • Leverage American Progress’ research and policy capabilities to support allies and serve as a resource to partners and allies on substantive issues.
      • Continue efforts to expand and broaden the national gun violence prevention coalition to include a diverse and inclusive group of stakeholders.
      • Represent and convey American Progress’ policy approach in discussions with a wide range of interlocutors, including coalition groups, members of Congress and Capitol Hill staff, state and local policymakers, stakeholder organizations, and press.
      • Plan and implement public and private events, meetings, summits, conferences, and other special events.
      • Coordinate with other teams at American Progress, including the CAP Action War Room, Government Affairs, Communications, Criminal Justice Reform, and Generation Progress.
      • Supervise the team’s Campaign Associate to facilitate and execute American Progress’ priorities within this issue area, maintain relationships with current and future partners, and build out new coalitions in the gun violence prevention movement.
      • Perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Advanced degree a plus.
  • At least six years (Associate Director) or eight years (Director) of experience in organizing, campaigns, legislative advocacy, coalition building, or related fields.
  • Excellent project-tracking and relationship-management skills.
  • Experience managing progressive issue campaigns with a coalition of groups and a breadth of existing relationships in progressive organizations.
  • Prior campaign or legislative experience on the gun violence prevention issue is preferred.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Highly creative, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with external partners.
  • Experience working with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations is a plus.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.
