Description

The School of Pharmacy (SOP)Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Pharmacy within the College of Health Professions. The Dean leads the faculty and staff in strategic planning, securing resources, implementing and evaluating academic operations, scholarship, research, service, and clinical practice operations. The School of Pharmacy programs include a three-year PharmD, an MS in pharmaceutical sciences, PharmD/MS, and residency programs (academic and clinical) in partnership with local healthcare organizations.  Our Health Professions campus location, in Hillsboro, Oregon is on the edge of the Portland Metro area. This optimal location allows one the ability to live in or near urban, suburban, or rural areas. Regardless of the residential setting, the Portland metro area benefits from access to numerous outdoor activities from mountains to beaches as well as a multitude of dining, entertainment, and other services found in a major metropolitan area.

The Dean serves the College of Health Professions on the Deans and Directors Council, reports to, and is supervised by the Executive Dean and Vice Provost of the College of Health Professions in an open and inclusive university environment. Requirements

IDEAL ABILITIES AND CAPACITIES

The ideal candidate is an accomplished, visionary leader with the ability and strong desire to lead SOP to the next level of achievement and prominence.  A proven commitment to advancing pharmacy education & practice, pharmaceutical sciences, interprofessional education and practice, scholarship, original research, and community service, as well as knowledge of ACPE accreditation requirements, is expected.  The School of Pharmacy Dean will have a demonstrated passion for the University’s mission of serving the underserved and the skills necessary to flex communication styles to racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.

An earned doctorate terminal degree is required, as are credentials suitable for a tenured academic appointment.  In addition, evidence of the following qualities is desired:              

  • advocacy for increased access to care for vulnerable populations
  • advocacy for equity and increasing the diversity of faculty, staff, and students within the pharmacy program
  • engagement with currents trends and issues in pharmacy education and practice, on the global, national, state, and regional levels
  • nimble, strategic, and innovative leadership in fiscal management, assessment, and continuous programmatic improvement
  • support for individual faculty needs including work/life balance, differing academic, research, or career goals, and practice settings; valuing academic freedom and possessing a balanced view between accreditation and curricular needs
  • appreciation of the differences between academic career settings and pharmacy/clinical practice career settings
  • senior-level administrative experience, preferably in an educational setting, demonstrating an inclusive, collegial approach to administration and a commitment to a consensus-based and shared governance tradition
  • successful experience launching new academic programs and integrating them into an established organizational structure
  • understanding of the importance of enrollment management and student success issues and experience initiating successful student recruitment, progress, engagement, and retention strategies generally and specifically related to ethnically and socioeconomically diverse populations;
  • talent representing the SOP and its mission and needs within the University structure, professional and legislative organizations, alumni, advisory board, industry-based stakeholders, and philanthropic entities
  • values research and the pharmaceutical sciences as a distinct contributor to pharmacy education and supports funding, grantsmanship, space, and personnel needs, and professional development
  • ability to effectively and strategically make hiring decisions that facilitate the university’s commitment to diversity; an ability to be a creative negotiator to attract and maintain excellent faculty and staff
  • possess creativity, energy, flexibility, optimism, and a sense of humor that is able to foster collegiality, interprofessional collaborations internally and externally and provides mentorship where necessary. 

Minimum Qualifications
An earned doctorate or the equivalent in the pharmacy field; a minimum of five years of progressively responsible academic administrative experience as a department chair, dean within a university setting, or experience as an assistant or associate dean; rank of full professor or demonstrated record of comparable academic experience, demonstrated fundraising ability and experience; demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; demonstrated experience with holistic recruitment and retention practices with faculty, staff, and students; ability to establish and maintain collegial and effective working relationships with diverse constituencies; and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with appropriate professional decorum with internal and external stakeholders.
